How to Stop Problem Dog Behaviours Before they Start

It’s really not that complicated.  There are some simple things you can do before your dog develops “problem” behaviours:

1) Exercise

The big one.  Vital for calming over excited or energetic “problem” dogs.

2) Exercise

Can’t stress it enough.

3) Establish a routine and don’t let him down.

I think it is important – particularly with some rescue dogs – to set up and maintain a routine that he can rely on.  This means meals, walks and attention at fairly regular times and intervals. Once it is well established you can (and should) throw in the odd surprise and you can (and probably should if you find your pooch starting to dictate what and when things should happen) also afford to miss the occasional activity (but not meal!).  Your pooch expects little and will forgive you almost anything – but this is about building trust and providing stability.

4) Tell him he’s special.

Or at least say something nice to him.  He’ll appreciate the attention and might even feel like he has a purpose in his life.

5) Don’t leave him alone for too long.

Dogs can have abandonment issues just like us.  If he has to be left alone try leaving a radio on and an item of yours (one that he is allowed to destroy and can safely do so!) with him.  Your scent might keep him happy and pre-occupied (but if he destroys this too zealously approach with caution… :-) ).

5) Include him in family activities

Your dog might be a sideline in yours but you are your dogs life.  He is a pack animal. He needs to feel a part of the pack and including him in a car ride or on a family walk or making a point of throwing the ball for him at outdoor gatherings – definitely make a difference.

6) See he gets good medical attention when he needs it.

A basic animal right.
